Marti Schutte has spent more than two decades showing up for other people — in classrooms, on courts, in weight rooms, and on stages. She is a PE teacher, a certified personal trainer, a coach, and a faith-based speaker who has poured herself into her community with everything she has.
Then her own life fell apart. And she had to learn, for the first time, how to show up for herself.
The Long Version
Marti grew up with a deep love for movement, competition, and community. She built her career around those loves — teaching physical education, coaching basketball and softball, and eventually becoming a certified personal trainer. For over two decades, she showed up every single day for her students, her athletes, and her family.
Faith was always at the center of it. Marti has been a woman of deep, active faith her entire adult life — not the kind that stays safely in a pew, but the kind that gets tested in the middle of the night, in the middle of a crisis, in the middle of a life that looks nothing like you planned.
"I had spent my whole career teaching people how to be strong. I had no idea how much I still had to learn about it myself."
When her marriage fell apart, Marti found herself in territory she had never coached anyone through. The grief was physical. The loneliness was real. The questions she asked God in those early months were the hardest prayers she had ever prayed. But she kept praying them.
What came out of that season — slowly, imperfectly, one early morning at a time — was a story she knew she had to tell. Not because it was tidy. Because it was true. The Porch God Promised is that story: a memoir of heartbreak, healing, and the stubborn, beautiful faithfulness of a God who keeps His word even when we can barely keep ourselves together.
Today, Marti lives with a renewed sense of purpose. She still teaches. She still coaches. She still trains. And now she speaks — to women's groups, churches, and conferences — about faith, resilience, and what it looks like to rebuild your life from the ground up with God as your contractor.
